Jeff Nichols is expecting to sweep up a lot of hair today.

But the mess will all be worth it to send a military veteran or two to Washington, D.C. on Honor Flight Nevada.

Nichols is hoping to raise at least $2,000 today through his business — Capital Barber Shop at 256 W. Winnie Lane in Carson City — to benefit Honor Flight Nevada, a 501(c)3 non-profit that raises money to send United States military veterans to the nation’s capital for a tour of the service and war memorials that have been erected in their honor over the years.

Honor Flight Nevada founder Jon Yuspa told Carson Now in an earlier interview that the average cost of sending one veteran to Washington, D.C., is about $1,000.

Nichols said as soon as his doors opened at 9 a.m. Friday morning, about half a dozen customers came in to get their hair cut for charity.

“We got a good kick start this morning,” he said.

Already the business raised $500 before 10 a.m. for Honor Flight Nevada. The benefit runs all day until 6 p.m. Friday evening.

Nichols said 100 percent of Friday’s proceeds are donated to Honor Flight Nevada. All he and his staff are doing is providing the labor.

“We’re just cutting hair and that’s the donation,” he said. “We are asking for a minimum of $15, and we’re looking for a few hundred-dollar hair cuts as well.”
